Your taxes, filled in from the IRS's own records

The IRS already has a copy of nearly every tax form sent to you: W-2s, 1099s, 1098s. Download those records, add them here, answer a few questions, and you get every line of your Form 1040 plus a step-by-step guide to file it for free.

Your files never leave this computer. The PDFs are read inside your browser, and the page is technically blocked from sending anything over the internet. Close the tab and it's all gone.

Download your transcripts from the IRS

  1. Go to irs.gov/your-account and sign in (it uses ID.me; the first time takes about 10 minutes with a photo ID).
  2. Open Records & Status, then Tax Records, then View or create transcripts.
  3. Download these PDFs (click EN next to each):
    • Wage & Income Transcript for the year you're filing. Married? Your spouse signs in to their own account and downloads theirs too.
    • Account Transcript for the year you're filing (shows any estimated payments).
    • Account Transcript for the year before (gives last year's AGI, which you need to e-file).
Timing: employers and banks keep sending forms to the IRS into the spring, and the IRS says a transcript may not be complete until about July. If you file early, compare the list this site shows with the paper forms you received, and add anything missing.

Who this is for

Works well for: W-2 jobs, bank interest, dividends, stock sales, retirement and Social Security income, unemployment, a mortgage, student loans, HSAs, children, and a simple side business. Federal return for every filing status, plus Illinois. Florida and Washington have no state income tax on wages.

Not for: rental properties, partnerships/K-1s, farm income, foreign income, or anything the site flags. It tells you when you've hit one of those.

A few questions

The transcripts cover the forms. These fill in what the IRS doesn't know. Your return updates as you answer.
